Developmental Coaching

Coaching can be a vehicle for inner transformation and growth. When you combine coaching principles with vertical leadership development and action-inquiry it generates learning that changes not just what you think but how you think. Its like putting on a fresh pair of glasses and seeing things differently to how you did before. This is the basis of developmental coaching.

There are two strands of development, and both are important. Horizontal development is about learning new skills and capabilities, whereas with vertical development we expand our capacity to think, feel, and act in more complex ways. We become more adaptable and comfortable with uncertainty, and operate less in black and whites, and more in the ‘grey’.

Researchers have identified seven stages of vertical development. At each new stage, leaders expand their capacity to deal with complexity and they have greater leadership flexibility.

If developmental coaching interests you, we will investigate what stage you are mostly operating from and we start to unravel the threads that are holding you back from expanding into more of who you are.

Why does vertical development matter? Research shows that leaders that operate from later stages of vertical development have higher leadership effectiveness in all 8 competencies identified in the study (e.g. Leading Change, Managing Performance, Creating a Compelling Vision, etc.).
